THE KRAPINA NEANDERTHAL MUSEUM

Several hundred metres from where the Krapina prehistoric people settled long ago, now stands the Krapina Neanderthal Museum. Attractively embedded into the landscape between two hills, the museum’s appearance and proportions bear a resemblance to the Krapina half-open cave. From an architectural point of view, the edifice is full of symbolism, and thus under the cave there is a stream that emerges again before the very entrance to the museum, signifying the flow of time. Crossing over it, through the large doors we enter the past – a “past” in the entrance made of “artificial stone” (concrete), a simulation in itself of a prehistoric habitat, where visitors can observe the exterior environment from the perspective of a neanderthal.
